What's the function of neurotransmitters

Hi so on my homework for biology i am getting a little confused. We learned about Neurotrasmitters friday in class... but i wasn't there so i got the notes online... but they didn't really help "explain" to me what they are in as much detail as my teacher.

So on Thursday i got the homework sheet ahead of time and i am trying to do it but it is kinda hard because i got stuck on the first question >_>

it says, "what's the function of neurotrasmitters?"

ok it sounds kinda easy ik... not im caught up on two answers that seem right from my notes.

a) to trasmit nerve impulses across the synapse

or

c) none of the above

I first picked "none of the above" because don't they just change the permiability of the sodium channels in the next axon? or do they actaully transmit the nerve impulse? (i've read that answer other places)

so...which one would it be? thanks!

Update 1: ...i am just stuck on what answer is the right one and what you wrote is exactly what I've seen on other sites... so its of no help to me... all i'm asking is if they transmit the nerve impulse or not... its yes or no...
