Water, by virtue of its low molar mass, would be predicted to be a gas at room temperature. Yet we know from everyday experience that water is a liquid at room temperature. Based on the boiling points of the other hydrides of group 6A (H2S, H2Se, and H2Te), the boiling point of H2O should be about ?85°C. Why is the actual boiling point of water so far from its predicted value?

A. Water is polar, which causes the boiling point to be higher than predicted.

B.The dispersion forces for water, because it is such a small molecule, are much larger than expected, causing the boiling point to be higher than predicted.

C.Water exhibits hydrogen bonding, a very strong intermolecular force, which causes the actual boiling point of water to be higher than predicted.

D.The atomic mass of oxygen is about 16 times that of hydrogen, making the water molecules very unbalanced. This large difference in atomic mass between the two constituent elements causes a higher than predicted boiling point
