How to write a chemical equation? Please help!!

Okay lets say we're writing a chemical equation for sodium and chlorine.
(correct me if i am wrong anywhere)

Sodium has one electron in its outer shell, meaning it can lose one easily.
Chlorine has 7 electrons on its outer shell so it can get it easily.

For these to bond, sodium has to give one electron to chlorine in order to "satisfy" each atom.

When sodium loses one electron, it becomes +1 and when chlorine gets an added electron, it becomes -1

So when you bond these elements together, do they come out as Na1Cl1?
