A student needs to measure out exactly 25 mL of a solution for an experiment. He lets out a loud moan
and digs around in a drawer for a 25 mL volumetric pipet that themanufacturer claims measures out 25.00
± 0.02 mL. But he also finds a 25 mL graduated cylinder that supposedly measures with an uncertainty
of ± 0.1.
a. Which should he use? Explain.
b. Discuss the precision of his measurement.
c. Can anything be said about the accuracy of the measurement? Explain.
d. In reality, is there anyway he can actually measure out exactly 25 mL? Explain.
