Help with a simple limit problem?

this problem is driving me nuts and i know its a simple mistake i must be making.
I have to find the horizontal asymptote
lim x->? x/x-1

The book s answer is just 1 but i keep getting x/x-1... I multiply by 1/2x just because the book says it.. I really dont know why. if someone could explain why multiply by 1/2x that it would be awesome. Calc is kicking my *** and this is just calc I.

show me where i am wrong.
1.) lim x->? x/x-1
2.)lim x->? (x/x-1)(1/2x)
3.)lim x->? (1x/2x)/(x-1/2x)
4.)lim x->? (1x/2x)(2x/x-1)
5.)Then i cancel the 2x and im left with x/x-1 again
