Long-Shunt & Short-Shunt Compound DC Motors?

Hello, 

Wondering if someone could give me some applications and maybe pros/cons of long-shunt vs short-shunt compound wound DC motors. I can clearly see the differences in cumulative and differential connections, but not long-shunt vs short-shunt. To clarify, I understand the difference in wiring, but I don't see the reason for using one or the other. I'm looking more for differences in operating characteristics. My textbook just says "There is very little difference in the operating characteristics of long-shunt and short-shunt compound motors." 

Little difference means that there is still SOME difference, and it's bugging me to not know what the difference is. Thank you in advance for any help.
