Abstract: Multi-mode control systems and methods for range-extended plug-in electric vehicles. The plug-in electric vehicle principally utilizes a battery as an energy source and employs a secondary power source, such as a fuel cell subsystem, as a battery charger to extend the range of the vehicle. A control subsystem operates the secondary power source to minimize fuel consumption near an end of a trip. In some operating modes, the secondary power source operates at full rated power to reduce the required run time of the secondary power source, thereby increasing its lifetime. The secondary power source may also operate more efficiently at full rated power as compared to operating in a part power or load-following mode.
