Can I run a drone outrunner motor with a car ESC?

As part of a project we are using an outrunner drone motor to power a ball screw. 

Ideally we want to be able to run it in reverse as well as forward however not alot of drone specific ESC's have this capability. 

Can a ESC designed for an RC car be used on an outrunner motor? (both being brushless of course) 

The motor im using is a Scorpion SII-4020-420 .
