There are several good reasons for estimating inventories. The perpetual inventory record is often costly and time consuming. For some purposes such as for monthly financial statements, it may no be possible to take accurate physical counts of the inventories. Further, estimation may be required to assess the loss of goods by fire. Thus it is useful to examine some of the methods of inventory valuation based on estimation.
