Decarboxylation
The carboxyl group of amino acids may undergo enzymic decarboxylation to yield a corresponding amine. Biological amines are important compounds which participate in various physiological reactions. Some examples are histamine, tyramine and tryptamine.Reduction of a caraboxyl group can be carried out by strong reductant such as sodium borohydride (NaBH4) to yield the corresponding alcohol.

Esterification
The carboxyl group of amino acid can be esterified with an alcohol.
Acylation
The carboxyl group of amino acid can be acylated when treated with PCl5
