Quaternary Structure
Several proteins, especially enzyme proteins with molecular weights above 80,000 daltons, consist of several peptide chains or subunits occasionally linked by disulphide bonds and more commonly by secondary bonds.Such proteins are said to have quaternary structure. The peptide chains may be identical or may be more than one variety. The best studied protein in terms of its quaternary structure is haemoglobin (MW- 65,000), consisting of two alpha and two beta polypeptide chains, making it a tetramer. The functioning of this protein depends on the condition that all chains remain bound together.
