Majority of the compounds in the universe contain covalent bonds. For example, compounds present in animals and plants such as oils, proteins, sugar and wood are covalent compounds. Gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen chloride and ammonia are also covalent compounds. These compounds are formed by mutual sharing of outer electrons between two atoms and the bond thus formed is called covalent bond. Covalent compounds are also known as non-ionic compounds.
