It has been seen that iodine distributes itself between CS₂ and water with a distribution coefficient equal to 400 to wards CS₂. Thus if a weak solution of iodine is to be estimated, then a few drops of CS₂ (for CCI₄) may be added to this solution. As a result , a considerable amount of I2 will pass into CS₂ layer and give it a deep violet color. Now the solution may be titrated against hypo solution till the violet color in CS₂ layer disappears. Thus iodine acts as a distribution indicator in this case.
