They are usually obtained as powders or brittle solid having dark or metallic appearances. They generally have high electrical conductivity which decreases with increasing temperature (like metals). They have high thermal conductivity and metallic luster. This shows that these hydrides retain metallic properties.

Most of these hydrides are harder than parent metals they are brittle.

Surprisingly, some of these hydrides react like saline hydrides indicating hydrides hydrogen, H^-,

UH₃ + 3HCI   →    UCI₃ + 3H₂

whereas, some others are indicative of the presence of photonic hydrogen H⁺ in these compounds as for example, the electrolysis of titanium or palladium hydrides liberates hydrogen gas of the cathode.
