Force
A force is that physical cause which when acting on a body changes or tens to change the state of rest of or of uniform motion of the body in a straight line.
The m.k.s. or SI unit of force is the Newton which is defined as the force which when applied to a mass of one kg, gives it an acceleration of 1 m/s2
Hence the force F required to give a mass m an acceleration ∝ is
F [newtons] = m [kilograms] x ∝ [metres/second2]
The units of force n F.P.S., English and C.G.S. systems are poundal, pound and dyne respectively.
1 newton = 105 dynes = 7.23 poundals and 1 Ib =32.2 poundals
