If a piece of soft unmagnetised iron is brought near a bar magnet, it also becomes magnetized. This phenomenon of inducing magnetism is known as magnetic induction. If the S-pole of the magnet is brought near the soft iron piece, N-pole is induced at the end of the iron piece nearer to the inducing magnet and S pole is induced at the other end of the iron piece, as shown in.  soft iron piece then S and N poles are induced respectively at the nearer and distant ends of the iron piece.
