Cavitations
• Cavitations is defined as the formation of bubbles filled of vapours within the body of a moving liquid. These vapor bubbles begin to appear whenever the pressure at the point in a flow falls equal to or below the vapour pressure of the liquid.• When these bubbles flow with the liquid and come in contact with high pressure, the vapour gets condensed and the bubbles suddenly collapse.
• The space occupied by the bubble is filled by surrounding liquid, due to which some noise occurs and vibrations are produced.
• The cavities collapse on the surface of the body due to which material of solid surface gets eroded.
• The cavitations may occur in high-speed hydraulic machines such as turbines, pumps, marine propellers and in certain portion of the pipeline.
