Plant layout refers to the arrangement of the physical facilities including production centers for the manufacture of a product. The layout of new plant is determined by taking into consideration the following factors:-

(A)    Basic managerial policies and decisions.

The type of layout suitable for a particular plant will depend basically on the policies formulated by the management with regarded to size of plant the kind and quality of products, the scope for the expansion to be provided for, the extent to which the plant is to be integrated; amount of stocks to be carried at any time, the kind of employee facilities to be provided, etc.

(B)    Nature of plant location.

The size, shape and topography of the site at which the plant is located will naturally affect the arrangement of the general layout for receiving and shipping and of the best flow of production in and out of the plant.

(C)    Type of industry and process.

This is one of the most important factors influencing the choice of a certain plan of layout for a plant. Generally, the type of layout particularly the arrangement of machines at work cares and the location of workmen varies according to the peculiar nature of the industry to which the plant belongs.
