Field due to Two Parallel Sheets of Charge

Two plane parallel infinite sheets of charge with equal and opposite charge densities + σ and – σ. The magnitude of electric field on either side near a plane sheet of charge is E = σ / 2 ε0 and acts perpendicular to the sheet, directed outward (if charge is positive) or inward (if charge is negative).

(i) When the point P1 lies in between the sheets, the fields due to two sheets will be equal in magnitude and have the same directions. The resultant field at P1 is given by

E = E1 + E2 = σ / 2 ε₀ + σ / 2 ε₀ = σ / ε₀

(ii) At an outside point P2, the fields will be equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. The resultant field at P2 is given by

E = E1 - E2 = σ / 2 ε₀ - σ / 2 ε₀ = 0
